Brit receives award for portable oxygen canister campaign

A British man is to receive an award from the Asthma and Respiratory foundation of New Zealand for his work in enabling passengers on Air New Zealand flights to carry portable oxygen concentrators.
Graham Shaw, who suffers with kyphoscoliosis, a deformity of the spine which restricts his lung function, has worked with the airline to allow travellers to bring their own oxygen concentrators on board.
Previously, Air New Zealand had told passengers that there were portable oxygen concentrators on board its planes and that holidaymakers could not bring their own.
Jane Patterson, chief executive of the Asthma Foundation, said his work will help many people.
"Graham Shaw's efforts will make a big difference for New Zealanders who need long-term oxygen therapy. It will now be much easier for them to see family and friends," she added.
Speaking to MK News, Dr Phyllis Starkey, MP for Milton Keynes South West, said that it is absolutely unacceptable that some airlines in the UK are charging passengers substantial amounts of money for oxygen therapy, even if they bring their own oxygen canisters with them.
