Would oxygen equipment liven up the World Cup?

Oxygen equipment could be one way this year's Fifa World Cup might be brought to life, it has been suggested.

According to Channel News Asia, the somewhat lacklustre beginning of this year's tournament could be down to players not being able to breathe properly in South Africa.

Many of the games are being played at high altitude, with six of the ten stadiums standing more than 1,000 metres above sea level, the source noted.

It explained that the higher individuals are, the less oxygen there is in their blood, meaning footballers are required to breathe faster to keep oxygen levels into the blood from the lungs at a maximum rate.

Players are likely to suffer from fatigue as the heart beats quicker to compensate, the news provider added.

England midfielder Gareth Barry recently revealed oxygen treatment has enabled him to overcome injury and be in with a chance of appearing in the country's next match against Algeria.
