Whisky hangovers 'are worse than those caused by drinking vodka'

Those planning to enjoy a fine whisky over the festive period may want to invest in some home oxygen equipment for the following day, after new research found that darker alcoholic drinks can lead to worse hangovers.

A study conducted by Damaris Rohsenow, professor of community health at the Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies at Brown University, revealed that whisky processing creates many by-products known as 'congeners' which make a hangover worse.

The research found that whisky has 37 times as many of these than vodka does, meaning bourbon drinkers may want to invest in some pure oxygen to help them deal with the hangovers.

"While alcohol alone is enough to make many people feel sick the next day, these toxic natural substances can add to the ill effects as our body reacts to them," professor Rohsenow.

A study conducted by Temple University in Philadelphia, published in the journal Behavioural Neuroscience, found that coffee is not an effective hangover cure, which could encourage people to explore the benefits of pure oxygen treatment instead.
