Supplemental oxygen 'can lower blood pressure in sleep apnoea sufferers'Supplemental oxygen 'can lower blood pressure in sleep apnoea sufferers'

Sleep apnoea sufferers who embrace pure oxygen could see their blood pressure lowered as a result.

Dr Daniel Norman, fellow in pulmonary and critical care at the University of California San Diego Medical Center, claimed that patients who receive oxygen through a mask can significantly reduce their blood pressure.

He told the American Thoracic Society International Conference: "Sleep apnoea can have significant consequences on a person's physical health, and this study shows once again that treatment may lessen those risks."

More than half of those with sleep apnoea also have high blood pressure and this does not fall during sleep as it does in most people, delegates heard.

Christine Lake, who suffers with the condition, told the Daily Telegraph that she cannot live without her portable oxygen apparatus.

She said she needs to use oxygen therapy otherwise she feels tired and gets headaches, adding that sleep apnoea is a terrible thing to live with.
