Motorists up and down the country are being urged by road safety charity Brake to avoid the temptation to speed on rural routes.
Research published by the organisation in partnership with solicitors Digby Brown revealed one in five motorists (19 per cent) admitted to breaking the speed limit on a rural road within the last 12 months.
Furthermore, five per cent reported overtaking another vehicle when it was not safe to do so and 15 per cent said they had taken brows and corners too fast to completely safe.
The main reasons for individuals exceeding the speed limit on these routes were drivers feeling they are less likely to come across other traffic and that there are fewer speed cameras.
Deputy chief executive at Brake Julie Townsend commented: "People in rural communities and families visiting these areas this summer have a right to enjoy their surroundings without fearing for their safety."
