South Korea and Japan use oxygen to gain World Cup advantage

Both South Korea and Japan are using oxygen equipment in an attempt to bolster their chances of glory at the Fifa World Cup.

The former has utilised an oxygen generator to ensure squad members are acclimatised to conditions in South Africa, while the latter has been handing out oxygen tanks, the Daily Telegraph reports.

South Korean competitors have been sitting in a specially-equipped room at their national football training centre at Paju, near Seoul, which has a regulator pumping low-oxygen air through the space.

The Japanese squad have been handed one oxygen canister each and their coach Takeshi Okada explained: "I want them to use them for one or two hours every day at home. For example, they can use them while watching TV."

It was recently revealed featherweight boxing champion Urijah Faber was prescribed oxygen therapy by his doctor to help him recover from injuries he had sustained during bouts.
