Should England have utilised oxygen equipment?

The English football team could have used oxygen equipment to better prepare for their World Cup matches, it has been suggested.

Former Liverpool player Graeme Souness blamed the squad's poor approach to training at altitude for their lacklustre performances in the tournament so far, the Sun reports.

The Scottish pundit noted an athlete's body demands oxygen when playing above sea level and failure to acclimatise properly can have consequences on the pitch.

"England have been second to most balls. They're never on the front foot, give the ball away, they are rundown, they're tired," he explained.

Souness predicted the nation's representatives are going to be "in desperate trouble" when they take to the field for their next encounter against Slovenia on Wednesday June 22nd at 15:00 BST.

Channel News Asia recently observed the lack of goals seen in the opening round of the competition in South Africa may be down to players struggling to breathe properly in the altitude.
