Scotland 'needs electric cars to meet carbon reduction targets'

Scotland needs to take urgent action to meet its carbon emissions obligations, an organisation has claimed.

WWF Scotland has called for every new car in the country to be an electrically-powered one, otherwise air quality there will deteriorate further, which could lead to more people requiring home oxygen equipment.

The body made the recommendation to the Scottish government's Low Carbon Vehicle consultation and added that members of the public have to do their bit to improve the air quality.

Dr Sam Gardner, climate policy officer at the organisation, said action needs to be taken quickly.

"Although Scotland's climate emissions are declining, emissions from road transport are increasing. We therefore need to act quickly if we are to begin to address one of nation's biggest and increasing source of carbon pollution - road vehicles," he added.

Statistics obtained by the Edinburgh Evening News revealed that many areas of Edinburgh have levels of pollution above those recommended by European Union guidelines.
