Runners reminded of benefits of cross-training

Runners raising their oxygen levels through regular training have been reminded of the advantages of cross-training.

While running aids fitness and helps athletes prepare for major events, whether it be a 10k or a marathon, cycling, swimming and gym sessions can all work to their benefit.

In an interview with Reuters, Jay Dicharry, author of Anatomy for Runners, stressed the importance of the body's biomechanics and running.

According to the expert, the best way to avoid injury is to identify the body's weaknesses and to then address these as part of your training.

He told the news provider: "What are your problems? Do you over stride? Do you have posture issues? Poor foot control?

"Find out what your biggest problem is and fix it. That will improve where you are."

Cross training can help runners to target muscle groups that are not strengthened through running, while building a strong core is essential to improved posture.

Weight training and core strengthening classes also help to build tummy muscles and other areas.
