Sarah Gould, spokeswoman for Monster Pet Supplies, said: "Developing a fitness routine which sympathises with the health requirements of your pet can be a great idea.
"Walking or jogging with your dog, for example, can be a great source of exercise and promote a healthy heart for both of you."
The expert explained how she had met pet-owners who followed the eating habits of their dogs by cutting down their portion sizes and eating smaller amounts more regularly to maintain a healthy weight.
When embarking on a fitness regime, such as a run around the local park, don't forget to stretch your muscles before and after.
Target areas include the hamstrings, calves and quadriceps.
