Raising your oxygen capacity through exercise can help overcome the problem of snoring through weight management, an expert has claimed.
Snoring can often be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnoea, but other factors work to induce it, like smoking, alcohol and obesity.
According to Marianne Davey, director of the British Snoring and Sleep Apnoea Association, a change in lifestyle though better eating habits and increased exercise could help with snoring.
That is because it will enable you to better manage your weight so that the restriction in lung capacity caused by a beer belly does not result in the irritable habit.
Mrs Davey said: “Truncal obesity - waist size larger than hip size - better known as ‘beer belly’ - puts a strain on internal organs especially the heart and lungs.
“An increase of one deviation of BMI (body mass index) is associated with a four fold increased risk of snoring and/or sleep apnoea.”
As such, the expert argued that a healthy diet and exercise would make a “considerable difference” to the issue of snoring.
And it’s not just your physique that would improve by taking up exercise to reduce snoring, but your relationship could also benefit.
A poll by hotel chain Premier Inn discovered that snoring was the second biggest cause of bedroom bickering among British couples, surpassed only by the fight for the duvet.
One in ten couples admitted they fight at least twice a week because of snoring, with more than half of people saying men were the worst culprits.
In addition to taking to the gym or getting out on the road for a run, there are a number of dietary changes you can make to aid the affliction.
Men’s Health recommended using lemon juice in your meals to reduce its GI (glycemic index) by as much as 40 per cent, which means you will feel fuller for longer.
