Pure oxygen 'can boost anaerobic performance'

Breathing oxygen-enriched air can aid the short-term recovery of athletes taking part in exercise and sport, research has shown.

A study at Charles University in Prague set out to assess the effects of inhaling 99.5 per cent oxygen from Oxyfit and discovered that drops in performance were much smaller in those who breathed oxygen from a can than those given a placebo.

Participants completed two Wingate tests within ten minutes and were given oxygen-enriched air in the interval between them.

"On the basis of our measurements [it] can be observed that inhalation of Oxyfit in recess between supramaximal loads has [a] significant effect on improved performance in the subsequent anaerobic load," the researchers concluded.

A study published online in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports found that supplementary oxygen can help patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder exercise for longer.
