Post-exercise recovery tips for muscles and reduced oxygen needs
Recovery is vital for muscles after your oxygen levels have returned to normal following a tough workout.
To ensure your muscles get the best recuperative attention possible, take time out to stretch and enjoy gentle exercise to help flush out lactic acid from the legs.
Senior physiotherapist and director of Tatami Health Ellis Taylor said: “One of the best ways to avoid muscle pain after exercise is to perform an adequate active cool down.
“People should avoid the temptation after heavy exercise to sit and lounge about in awkward positions (on a couch for example).”
As well as stretching to allow muscles to relax and rest, you are advised to consume protein, carbohydrates and fats to refuel and repair the muscles.
One recommended source is fruit smoothies based on milk or soya, which can be preferable to energy drinks depending on your needs.
A cool down is vital for preventing injuries so make sure to elongate those quads, calves and hamstrings before settling down for the evening.
