Portable oxygen users with sleep apnoea could benefit from lifestyle change?

Many people use portable oxygen to help them cope with the effects of sleep apnoea and new research has suggested they may also find a lifestyle change helpful.
A study conducted by scientists at the University of Crete in Greece and published in the European Respiratory Journal showed eating a Mediterranean diet and getting plenty of exercise can be beneficial for people suffering from the disorder.
The researchers split 40 obese patients into two groups, both of which were asked to complete at least 30 minutes of exercise a day.
One half of the participants were told to follow a prudent diet and the others were required to eat Mediterranean food.
The scientists found those in the second group suffered fewer disturbances during the rapid eye movement phase of sleep.
Lead author of the investigation Christopher Papandreou highlighted that the number of disruptions to this stage of rest has been linked to an increased risk of developing diabetes type II.
Dr James LeFanu recently told the Daily telegraph that oxygen therapy can reverse sleep apnoea.
