Portable oxygen 'to protect sleepy drivers'

Motorists in the UK may want to buy oxygen in a bid to prevent them falling asleep at the wheel.

A study carried out by Direct Line insurance and safety organisation Brake found nearly three quarters of motorists (74 per cent) take to the road when still in need of some decent shut-eye.

It marks a significant rise when compared against figures recorded six years ago.

Just 46 per cent owned up to driving while feeling sleepy at that time, suggesting individuals should now more than ever consider portable oxygen to help them stay alert during long car journeys.

Campaigns officer at Brakes Ellen Booth said: "It only takes a couple of seconds of sleep to cause a fatal crash, yet millions of drivers are regularly getting behind the wheel while tired."

It was recently revealed oxygen equipment had enabled Canadian couple Brenda Cunningham and Bruce Eyre to take to the road, as the pair carried portable oxygen while riding their motorcycles.
