Portable oxygen to prevent adolescent weight gain?

Using portable oxygen may have the additional benefit of helping children stave off weight gain in adolescence, a study has suggested.

The product can be used to improve poor sleeping practices and researchers from the Center for Child Health, Behaviour and Development at Seattle Children's Research Institute found inadequate shut-eye can be a risk factor for obesity.

Led by Leslie Lytle, the investigators collected information on 723 teenagers in regards to how much they slept on weeknights and weekdays.

The results were presented at the Pediatric Academic Societies annual meeting in Vancouver, Canada.

Dr Lytle commented: "Sleep has long been recognised as an important health behaviour. We are just beginning to recognise its relationship to overweight and obesity in children and adults alike."

A team at the University of Bologna recently revealed youngsters who are tired when driving are up to twice as likely to be involved in a car crash than those who are not.
