Portable oxygen to help reduce cardiovascular disease risk?

Using portable oxygen to enable a person to get a good night's sleep could help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, a new study has suggested.

Researchers at the Department of Community Medicine at West Virginia University School of Medicine in Morgantown, US, found interrupted sleeping patterns are associated with the condition.

The team discovered eight per cent of the study population who snoozed for less than five hours a day were more than twice as likely to suffer cardiovascular disease.

Anoop Shankar, associate professor at the institute, commented: "Our study findings suggest that abnormal sleep duration adversely affects cardiovascular health."

The specialist added shut-eye disturbance may be a risk factor for the condition even in healthy subjects.

Results from the investigation have been published in the journal Sleep.

Long-distance driver Paul Connelly recently revealed he has started using additional oxygen to prevent him falling asleep while at the wheel.
