Portable oxygen 'offers numerous physiological advantages'

The physiological benefits of using portable oxygen are plentiful, it has been suggested.

Oxygenated cells can perform at an optimal level and require less energy expenditure, according to the Robert M Lombard Hyperbaric Oxygenation Medical Center.

Using oxygen equipment can help saturate the body fluids with up to six times the normal amount of oxygen, while increasing the available supply of the substance to cells, the source explained.

This enables cells to "function beyond a 'maintenance status' or to be 'jump-started' and into a functioning state".

According to the institute, the process allows oxygen to effortlessly cross the blood-brain barrier and is then readily available for immediate use by the brain tissue.

It added the method enables cells to metabolise vital glucose stores that are required in the production of neurotransmitters, which help the brain function.

Tony Smithwell, a US soldier who served in Iraq, recently noted oxygen therapy has enabled him to improve his sleeping practices after he struggled to obtain decent rest at night.
