Portable oxygen could help elderly drivers maintain focus

Portable oxygen may be useful for elderly drivers after research found they are more likely to crash in non-problematic environments.

According to the University of Granada, 24.8 per cent of drivers aged over 74 keep driving and the injuries they suffer are worse than people in younger age groups.

Over the last few decades, there has been an increase in crash rates for motorists who are over 60.

Those who decide to buy oxygen may find they are less tired when they take to the road and could be less likely to end up in a collision.

"The authorities should allow elderly drivers to keep driving as long as they can, providing that this does not involve any risk for their own safety and that of others," the education establishment observed.

Oxygen therapy could also be used to help people keep their full attention when driving, as 31 per cent of people told the Co-operative Financial Services their ability gets worse if they have company in a vehicle.
