Oxygen users Southend United hold on to successful manager

Southend United football club, who are known to use portable oxygen to reenergise during training, have asked the manager that brought them success to stay with the team.

Paul Sturrock signed a two-year contract with the side, which is due to end this summer, but having transformed them into second division leaders, the club wants him to stick around.

An extension to his post has been drawn up, which BBC Sport said still offers the team compensation if he leaves his position.

But it seems the manager is happy to stay on, as he wrote in Southend's Echo newspaper he is "only a quarter of the way through what I think I can achieve here".

"I would like to develop this club even further and get it back, or better, than its normal position in the leagues," Mr Sturrock added.

Southend United have beaten Port Vale and Northampton town this month, drawn with Dagenham & Redbridge and lost 1-2 to Shrewsbury.

They are currently at the top of League Two, followed by Crawley Town and Cheltenham.
