Oxygen treatment 'recommended for COPD patients'

Those suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) should be given oxygen treatment in order to improve their symptoms, one expert has been suggested.

In the March issue of American Family Physician, Dr Ann Evenson of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, advises the goals of COPD treatment are to reduce the negative effects of its symptoms, while lowering the risk of subsequent exacerbations.

She says long-term oxygen treatment for severely ill sufferers can help to reduce the risk of hospitalisation and if they have already been admitted to a healthcare centre, it could help to cut down on the amount of time they need to spend there.

Lori Palermo, writing for Everyday Health, previously advised that breathing oxygen-enriched air can help COPD sufferers' survival rates to increase.

Additionally, she suggested oxygen therapy can offer further benefits, including reducing a person's shortness of breath.
