Oxygen treatment 'effective in wound-healing'

Oxygen therapy can be an effective way to heal wounds, it has been suggested.
Dr Tarun Sahini, senior consultant at the Apollo Indraprastha Hospital in New Delhi, tells Thaindian News: "Oxygen plays a pivotal role in almost every major component of wound healing. Increasing the wound oxygen tension/pressure enhances the healing process."
He says oxygen treatment can be particularly beneficial to patients suffering from diabetes, traumatic injury and peripheral vascular disease, who may find that a poor supply of oxygen can stop their wounds from healing.
The therapy has proved to be particularly effective in terms of treating severe ischemic diabetic foot ulcers and soft tissue infections, Dr Sahini explains.
Dr Anil Gombar, senior physician at Max Hospital in New Delhi, recently told weeklyblitz.net that using oxygen treatment to help heal diabetics' wounds is "an exciting technique".
He added that every 30 seconds someone with the condition has to have a foot amputated.
