Oxygen treatment 'beneficial for sleep apnoea'

People who suffer from sleep apnoea-hypopnea syndrome (SAHS) can benefit from oxygen treatment if it is administered during the night, according to a medical study.

Research conducted at the Departamento de Neumología in the Hospital de la Santa Creu in Barcelona, Spain, has shown that SAHS sufferers can experience significant benefits following a course of oxygen therapy.

A study at the facility evaluated two groups of SAHS sufferers, one of which was given oxygen therapy for a period of two nights and the other administered with normal air.

Experts at the facility found that the group which was given oxygen treatment experienced noticeable improvement with regards to their SAHS, while those given air saw no difference.

The study authors wrote: "Neither quality of sleep nor heart rate changed. In conclusion, nocturnal oxygen administration in patients with SAHS and COPD and improved nocturnal hypoxia and reduced the total number of respiratory events."

Meanwhile, a study conducted at University of Bern in Switzerland found that low oxygen levels can contribute to the development of sleep apnoea and liver disease.
