Oxygen treatment 'based on sound physiological principles'

The treatment of wounds using oxygen therapy is based on sound physiological principles, one doctor has suggested.
Dr Tahin Sahini, senior consultant at the Apollo Indraprastha Hospital in New Delhi, tells Med India: "Without adequate oxygenation, normal healing process cannot take place."
"Oxygen plays a pivotal role in almost every major component of wound healing. Increasing the wound oxygen tension/pressure enhances the healing process."
He adds that using the treatment has been noted in the case of scuba divers to increase ambient pressures.
However, those with wounds are not the only ones who will benefit from oxygen therapy, Dr Sahini advises. Those suffering from smoke inhalation, neuro rehabilitation and tinnitus could all enjoy the advantages associated with breathing oxygen-enriched air.
Additionally, Beccy Mullins, clinical nurse specialist at the Centre for Healthy Sleep, recently said oxygen therapy is recommended by NICE as the "gold standard" for treating sleep apnoea and other problems associated with sleeping.
