Oxygen therapy to tackle air pollution?

UK residents concerned about air pollution levels could use oxygen therapy at home in order to ensure they remain fit and healthy.

The government has been taken to court today (December 13th) by environmental lawyers ClientEarth over the failure to meet targets relating to the reduction of pollution in the air up and down the country.

It is claimed that the coalition has been trying to put back the deadline for hitting the goals set by the European Union (EU) until after 2015, reports publication the Lawyer.

Chief executive officer of ClientEarth James Thornton branded the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance as "frankly pathetic" over the failure to reduce air pollution in the UK.

He added: "Instead of delaying action in the hope they can persuade the EU to weaken the legal limits the government needs to tackle this public health crisis now."

The court is being asked by ClientEarth to order the coalition government to draw up plans to reduce levels of air pollution in the UK before 2015, in line with EU regulations.

Some 17 regions and cities up and down the country, including London, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow and Cardiff, are not on target to hit the goals at the present time, the environmental law firm is arguing.

According to ClientEarth, the government should have met these targets by January 1st 2010.

Director of the Environmental Research Group at King's College London Professor Frank Kelly recently stated the health of children in London may be impacted by the air pollution in the capital city.

The Islington Tribune reported on the latest Air Quality Summit at the local Town Hall, which claimed illnesses caused by air pollution are therefore costing the NHS money.

As many as 4,300 people die early every year as a result of the pollution in the air, Mr Kelly pointed out.
