Oxygen therapy 'the only proven treatment' for emphysema

Oxygen therapy is the only treatment which has been proven to alleviate the symptoms of emphysema, according to one source.

An article in the New York Times stated that oxygen therapy has been shown to help emphysema sufferers, as the condition leads to decreased lung function.

According to the newspaper, regular oxygen therapy has been proven to prolong the lifespan of emphysema sufferers, as well as having a positive effect on alertness, motor speed and hand strength.

It said: "About 40 per cent of patients improve enough in one month to stop continuous treatment, although such patients should be observed closely."

The newspaper added that oxygen therapy can help people suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD).

Meanwhile, Dr Richard Casaburi recently told delegates at the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation that oxygen therapy can help to prolong the lives of COPD sufferers.
