Oxygen therapy 'saves cat's life'

A firefighter who had to administer oxygen to a cat following a blaze likely saved its life, according to the Daily Gleaner.

The newspaper reported that the black-coloured feline, known to the fire crew as Smokey, was rescued from a fire and suffered from exposure to smoke and heat.

Fireman Marty Vail said that while he had never administered oxygen therapy to a cat before, he did not think twice about helping the pet.

"I worry about people and animals just about the same," he said.

"I just wanted to make sure it had a little bit of oxygen to clear its head."

Some US fire departments have special masks designed to make it easer to administer oxygen treatment to dogs and cats.

Texas-based news channel KTRE 9 reported that the Nacogdoches fire department is among those that have recently been issued with the special gear to help deliver oxygen to animals in need.
