Oxygen therapy news: Migraine sufferers 'discriminated against'

People using oxygen to help them recover from migraines may feel stressed about their situation at work, as one charity has argued those who suffer from the headaches are often discriminated against by employers.

The Migraine Association of Ireland said some harm had come from healthy individuals using the illness as an excuse not to go to their jobs, which has led to others being treated badly when they are unwell.

Information officer at the organisation Donna Ryan explained: "We hear stories from migraineurs who are unfairly receiving warnings or facing dismissals because the unseen nature of the condition means it is often not fully understood by employers and colleagues."

The expert added that companies are "legally obliged" to make adjustments for people who suffer from the headaches, such as reducing the light and noise workers are exposed to.

Mr Ryan's comments follow the release of survey by the City of London Migraine Clinic, which found 69 per cent of those with the condition feel their doctor does not appreciate the way it affects their life.
