Oxygen therapy 'increasingly popular' among autism sufferers

Oxygen therapy is becoming an increasingly popular method for treating people who suffer from autism, it has been suggested.

Writing for Whyy.org, Maiken Scott noted diagnosis of the disorder has been increasing at a rapid pace in the last ten years and identified oxygen therapy as a favourable technique to treat it.

The writer noted the patients of Dr Patrick Elliott, medical director of Hyperbaric Therapy USA, are predominantly autistic children.

Dr Elliott observed oxygen equipment can be beneficial to these youngsters because various toxins have caused damage in the immune system.

"The oxygen itself helps decrease the inflammation, to improve immune function and ultimately the decreased inflammation may improve blood flow to certain areas," he explained.

Dr Elliott added he focused his efforts on oxygen therapy because his twin sons were both diagnosed with autism at the age of two.

The Jamaica Gleaner recently indicated oxygen equipment could be used by stroke victims as the apparatus can increase the amount of the substance in the brain's tissue.
