Oxygen therapy 'can help wounds heal quicker'

Oxygen therapy is becoming increasingly popular as a means to treat wounds, it has been suggested.

Dan Buckner, chief executive officer of Heritage Medical Centre in Bedford County, noted the treatment was initially used on scuba divers who suffered the bends, but is now being utilised for other medical benefits, the Times Gazette reports.

The industry figure explained during oxygen therapy, "the plasma in your body carries enough oxygen so that you could survive without your red blood cells".

Kristi Lane, director of Advanced Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine, described the method as a natural way to enable wounds and scabs to heal from the inside out.

She added the option is successful as it forces the blood to flow and therefore supply the cuts with adequate supplies of oxygen.

It was recently suggested oxygen equipment could be employed to help diabetics recover from ulcers more quickly and alleviate the need of limbs to be amputated.
