Oxygen therapy can avoid surgery for cluster headaches

People using oxygen therapy to treat cluster headaches could avoid having surgery, a news provider has claimed.

MyFox Atlanta said that cluster headaches can often hit people very quickly, staying around for days and causing, often unbearable, pain.

The source said that in rare cases surgery may be required, but oxygen therapy can help sufferers. If the treatment is effective it can avoid surgery.

"The headaches can hit every day, sometimes several times a day," it added, saying that the pain tends to strike in 'cluster periods'.

"Surgery is recommended for cluster headache sufferers who don't respond to treatments like oxygen therapy or medication," it stated.

Recently, Dr Peter Goadsby, from the Headache Center at the University of San Francisco, said that oxygen should be used more to treat cluster headaches. He told delegates at the American Neurological Association's 133rd annual meeting that it can have substantial benefits to patients.
