Oxygen news: Experts provide home gym tips

Experts have provided tips to those working out at home, which could include more and more Brits as workers feel the squeeze and look for cheaper ways to keep fit than paying for a gym membership.

But a smaller cost is not the only benefit for people deciding to train in the comfort of their abodes, with one expert pointing out this is also an opportunity to tailor-make a gym for the person who will be using it.

Speaking to Reuters, programme director of online workout site DailyBurn.com Lisa Wheeler said: "If you don't like dumbbells, don't buy them ... Just add what you like to do."

All you need to do this is a space at home that measures around five sq ft, so that individuals have enough to move around while they are building up a sweat.

It is not even essential for people to buy specialised equipment to work on, the expert remarked.

She noted: "You can use things you find around the house ... I often encourage moms to pick up a soccer ball or basketball to use as a medicine ball."

However, when it comes to products people can pick up from the shops, Ms Wheeler recommended resistance tubes and advised laying down a mat before doing exercise on the floor.

Reuters also spoke to exercise expert Colleen Logan of fitness equipment manufacturer Icon, who said soft kettlebells are available, which can be used for hand weights, while the treadmill is still one of the most popular pieces of kit.

The specialist said running machines are very helpful, but it is best to use them alongside other types of workout.

"Any exercise expert will tell you fitness includes strength, flexibility and balance training," she stated.

One other product people trying to improve their health may find helpful is portable oxygen, which is used by some professional athletes to help them stay reenergised and recover quickly from strenuous activity.

Joanne Knight, editor of Women's Fitness, recently noted a home gym can be useful because it takes away some of the excuses people may have to skip exercise, since it they do not have to travel to workout.
