Oxygen news: Exercise 'not a treatment for all migraine sufferers'

Exercise has been shown to be beneficial to migraine sufferers, who may use portable oxygen to help them cope with the condition, but one expert has warned physical activity may not be wise treatment for everybody.

Spokesman for The Migraine Trust Dr Fayyaz Ahmed explained that some people can suffer from the headaches because they have exerted themselves too much.

"Exercise can sometimes give people migraines called exercise-induced migraines or exertional migraines and hence will not be a treatment effective for all," he said.

Researchers at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden recently conducted a study which found that physical activity is as effective as drugs in treating the headache condition.

Mr Fayyaz warned that the investigation was a small and short one, which may not provide enough data to judge for definite that exercise is a good alternative to prophylactic medicines.

However, he stated that keeping fit is beneficial for general health and is still worthwhile.
