Oxygen news: Being overly tired 'can be dangerous'

Being overly tired can cause problems with people's health, lifestyles and even their safety, it has been claimed.

Lisa Artis, spokeswoman for The Sleep Council, which aims to raise awareness of the importance of quality rest, warned fatigue can put individuals in danger.

She noted people who are sleepy have slower reflexes, which could be hazardous while driving or using heavy machinery.

Furthermore, their lifestyle could take a hit from a shortening of their temper and loss of "appetite and enthusiasm to make the most of everyday living".

"Sleep fulfils a vital role in keeping us healthy and happy," the official stated, noting being overly tired can also make it difficult to make decisions and more likely individuals will make mistakes.

The Sleep Council advised having regular bedtime and waking times, making bedrooms comfortable, taking plenty of exercise, reducing caffeine intake and quitting smoking are some measures people can take to improve the quality and quantity of their rest.

In the meantime, portable oxygen may be useful to revitalise those who are finding themselves getting worn out, as it can improve alertness and has an energising effect.
