Oxygen equipment to improve World Cup performances?

Professional football players could perhaps use oxygen equipment to help them better prepare for the demands of the game.

International strength coach Charles Poliquin has claimed the training performed by footballers is anaerobic in intensity and does not make best use of oxygen, the Irish Independent reports.

The expert stated the sport is around 40 years behind other genres in its training methods.

Football is played in very short sprints in the most part - during either attacking or defensive play - so the energy demands utilise anaerobic rather than aerobic systems, he explained.

Mr Poliquin added those that are not in great physical condition need more oxygen intake.

"The more body fat a player has, the more oxygen it requires as fat is just dead weight," he remarked.

Both the South Korean and Japanese football sides used oxygen equipment in the run-up to their World Cup campaigns this year.
