Grandfather Timothy Taylor requires high levels of oxygen 24 hours-a-day as he battles pulmonary fibrosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the Burton Mail reports.
The former sailor, who once represented England as a helmsman, has been allowed to leave hospital because an oxygen mask can ensure he receives the required levels of home oxygen.
He commented: "This is how I want it at the moment - the family can come round and see us, and friends come too."
Mr Taylor added he is hopeful to be able to go outside when the weather picks up so he can enjoy a picnic.
Portable oxygen recently helped prevent a family tragedy after a father used oxygen tanks to resuscitate his wife and children following a gas leak on a boat in the US.
