Older people have been encouraged to partake in cardiovascular exercise to boost their oxygen supply and improve blood supply through the body.
A recent study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology showed that older people who practice tai chi are physically stronger and enjoy better heart health than their more sedentary peers.
According to Anna Mason, founder of Distance Dieters, there are a range of activities people can undertake to keep their bodies young, healthy and flexible.
She said: “Walking, jogging, running, rowing, cycling and any exercise which gets the whole body moving will help to improve the cardiovascular system, improving blood flow and oxygen supply.”
The expert recommended exercising regularly as “consistency is king”, advising a minimum of 15 minutes of activity per day.
Ms Mason also highlighted the fact that as we age, our muscles get tighter, so it is a good idea to take a flexibility class like yoga to keep muscles lean and long.
