Dolores Takemoto, a professor of biochemistry at Kansas State University, originally began exploring how diabetics could preserve their eyesight and instead stumbled on evidence which could help prolong the vision of children with retinoblastoma.
Coonexin46, also known as Cx46, is present in the body when oxygen levels are low and it also produces cancer cells which seal themselves off from the oxygen supplied by the blood vessels.
"Any time there's a drop in oxygen within the body, Cx46 appears," Dr Takemoto said.
The findings, which were published in the International Journal of Cancer, could help with other conditions such as chronic heart disease, retinal ischemia and glaucoma, professor Takemoto added.
Deanna Cohen, writing for the Bank the Money blog, recently advised that oxygen therapy can be helpful in treating a multitude of chronic degenerative health problems, including stroke, diabetic ulcers and brain injuries.
