Journalist uses portable oxygen to complete cycling challenge

A journalist has utilised portable oxygen to help him complete a marathon cycling challenge.

Simon Usborne, a reporter for the Independent, joined scores of other riders to compete in the End-to-End challenge, the newspaper reports.

The course is a trip from the tip of Britain - John O'Groats - to the bottom - Land's End.

And Mr Usborne was able to conquer the race by using oxygen equipment.

He revealed he was "sucking in oxygen like a free-diver about to take the plunge".

The product enabled him to "rise on my pedals … developing a rhythm in time with my breathing".

It took the reporter nine days to complete the epic route - which was over 1,000 miles in length - and among the other participants were Olympians James Cracknell and Rebecca Romero.

Rally driver Guy Wilks is another sportsman to have been using oxygen equipment recently, as he is utilising the substance to help him recover from injuries received following a crash.
