How running aids more than fitness

There are more benefits to raising oxygen levels through running than just improved cardiovascular health.

While running can be integral to maintaining a healthy weight and fitness, it also plays a crucial role in supporting bone density.

According to the National Osteoporosis Society, 99 per cent of our calcium is stored in our bones.

The skeleton grows stronger through weight-bearing exercises like jogging, aerobics and dancing.

Figures from a Dublin University show that running for 30 minutes burns calories 40 per cent faster than activities like cycling or tennis.

That is according to Charlene Hutsebaut, exercise expert for The De-Stress Diet and founder of charlenehutsebaut.com.

She said: "Running is great for bone health. The National Osteoporosis Society advocates exercise, including exercises as a means to healthy strong bones."

The expert advised those with bone density problems to consult their GP before undertaking a new exercise regime.

However, this is a great activity, not only as it supports bones, but because it is cost-effective and can be carried out almost anywhere.

Ms Hutsebaut recommended carrying a pair of trainers on business trips so you can get out for a run when you have the time, rather than paying gym fees.

She said: "You get breathing time away from the stress of work and you don't need a gym."

The benefits do not stop there, however, as running is proven to help boost people's sex lives.

A study from Cornell University revealed increased "sexual prowess" in male runners compared to men two to five years their juniors.

Figures from Harvard also indicated that male runners over the age of 50 enjoyed a 30 per cent lower risk of developing impotence if they ran for at least three hours per week.

Since running tends to take participants outdoors, it also raises their exposure to vitamin D, which aids the absorption of calcium for healthier bones.

Ms Hutsebaut said: "I always tell my clients, 'It's free!' You can out your front door and run. The only equipment you will need is a good pair of trainers and your body."
