Firefighters 'use special oxygen masks' to treat pets

Firefighters have long used oxygen masks designed for people on pets that have been injured in a blaze, but a recent invention means that four-legged friends may now be able to get better treatment.

Texas-based ABC affiliate KTRE 9 reported that the local fire department in Nacogdoches may now be better able to save the lives of pets as well as their human masters thanks to the specialised oxygen masks.

"In the past we never had the means or the tools to take care of them, but now we'll be able to deliver oxygen, do basic first aid, just as we would with a human being," commented deputy fire chief Frankie Hamby.

The oxygen delivery devices have been applauded by local veterinarians, as well as a supervisor at an animal shelter in the area.

Meanwhile, humans who suffer from shortness of breath due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder may wish to consider inhaling oxygen-enriched air as one way of treating the condition, according to an Everyday Health writer.

Lori Palermo commented that individuals with the disorder may have an increased rate of survival if they make the most of oxygen therapy.
