FTSE 100 firms' carbon reduction targets 'too low'

Greenhouse gas targets set by FTSE 100 companies are so low that they will make little or no contribution to the country's aim of reducing emissions, a new report has found.

The government has targeted reductions of between 34 and 42 per cent against 1990 levels by 2012, however, research by the Carbon Disclosure Project shows large companies' own goals are too modest.

A major part of the problem is that energy, utilities and materials firms only plan a reduction of 1.2 per cent, despite accounting for 77 per cent of all FTSE 100 emissions, which could highlight the need for people to invest in home oxygen equipment.

"These carbon intensive sectors will need to take on more aggressive targets if they are to deliver in line with government commitments," the report concluded.

A government audit of carbon emissions recently found that hospitals, prisons and other public buildings are damaging the environment more than previously thought, which could encourage people to consider investing in home oxygen equipment.
