Edinburgh drivers told to consider asthma sufferers

West Lothian council has raised concerns at the number of cars sat stationary with their engines running, which contributes to pollution levels in the city.

A spokeswoman for the local authority told the Edinburgh Evening News that these emissions make things difficult for asthma sufferers, something which may encourage people to invest in portable oxygen for when they leave the home.

Members of the public are being urged to report drivers who sit in traffic jams with their engines running, with the council writing to the culprits to point out the dangers of what they are doing.

"We'll write to drivers and tell them that idling costs money and fuel, and harms the environment. They're causing damage to air quality and this affects anyone with asthma," the representative told the newspaper.

The plan will benefit the city, which has higher levels of nitrogen oxide than those recommended by the European Union, the Edinburgh Evening News reported.
