The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has published a list of best practice advice to help individuals to stay safe when the roads get wet.
Sunny weather might be bathing many parts of the country in a warm glow at present, but all this is about to change as severe downpours have been forecast for the coming weekend.
As a result, motorists need to be prepared for driving in the rain and this means being extra vigilant in regards to what is going on around their vehicle, as well as reducing their speed to a level that matches their confidence in the conditions they are driving.
Furthermore, remember to turn on the car's lights when visibility drops in poor weather, as this will help the driver to both see and be seen by other road users.
IAM chief examiner Peter Rodger commented: "A suddenly very wet road surface increases the chances of slipping when braking or steering, which is a problem not just for motorists, but for the cyclists and motorcyclists in among them too."
