Could oxygen for sleep apnoea prevent physical and mental illness?

Some sleep apnoea sufferers use portable oxygen to help them with the condition and the comments of one expert show that tackle the problem could prevent individuals becoming both physically and mentally unwell.

Mrs Marianne Davey, director of the non-profit organisation British Snoring & Sleep Apnoea Association, explained the processes that happen during slumber are very important and without them illness can set in.

Hormones released while asleep repair tissue and these growth and rebuilding chemicals are "governed" by shut-eye, she highlighted.

"If we are not sleeping well and are constantly waking during the night the hormones that work by day and those that work by night become confused and work against each other," Ms Davey stated.

People who do not get sufficient rest could start feeling depressed and may suffer bad temperedness and become argumentative.

Meanwhile, the physical impact of sleep apnoea was underlined by a recent Spanish study, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, which suggested severe obstructive versions of the disorder were linked with a higher risk of cardiovascular death in women.
