Commercial property 'contributes 18 per cent of UK's carbon emissions'

The Carbon Trust is calling for action to be taken to reduce the carbon emissions from non-domestic buildings, which contribute around a fifth of the UK's total emissions.
According to the organisation, all commercial properties should strive to achieve an A grade energy rating, which will help the country meet its reduction targets and improve air quality for those who use home oxygen.
The Building the Future, Today report says emissions from non-domestic buildings need to be cut by 80 per cent by 2050 and, if the right plan of action is put in place, they could be reduced by a third before 2020.
Stuart Farmer, head of buildings strategy at the Carbon Trust and author of the paper, said a joint effort is needed to improve air quality for people who carry portable oxygen canisters.
"For policy makers and business, rolling out Display Energy Certificates to all non-domestic buildings must be the foundation stone to deliver not only better buildings, but better use of buildings too," he stated.
Myron Ebell, from the US free market think tank Competitive Enterprise Institute, recently told the Daily Express that the UK would have to make massive economic sacrifices to meet the emission reduction targets outlined at the Copenhagen summit.
