Coffee and exercise 'are not hangover cures'

Black coffee, paracetamol and exercise are not effective hangover cures, it has been claimed, which could encourage people to explore the benefits of oxygen therapy instead.

The Times newspaper has investigated various claims that these substances can help people feel better after heavy drinking and found that none are effective.

Researchers at Temple University found coffee can exacerbate the condition, while exercise can compound the body's fluid debt, according to Gillian Merron, the minister for public health.

"You're not going to compensate with a workout," she said.

Other supposed remedies, such as having another drink, are not recommended either as this simply delays the point at which one will feel better, according to Louise Sutton, from the Carnegie Centre for sports Performance and Wellbeing at Leeds Metropolitan University.

Whisky drinkers in particular may want to explore the benefits of pure oxygen after a study conducted by Damaris Rohsenow, professor of community health at the Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies at Brown University, found that this drink leads to worse hangovers than vodka.
