Carbon emission reduction targets 'would hurt Britain'

Were Britain to adopt the carbon emission reduction targets recently outlined at the Copenhagen summit, it would have huge economic consequences, an expert has claimed.

Myron Ebell, from the US free market think tank Competitive Enterprise Institute, told the Daily Express that the country's infrastructure would suffer and rural communities would be cut off.

On top of this, energy costs would rise as would the price of food as a result of green taxes.

Mr Ebell told the newspaper that the sacrifices the country would have to make would be huge, which could encourage people to continue to invest in home oxygen equipment until significant action to reduce pollution is taken.

"We would see the return of bullock carts to the streets of Britain if we are to achieve the levels proposed at the summit," he said.

The Reading Chronicle recently reported that pollution in the city is getting worse, with 43 of the 51 nitrogen oxide stations in the town showing a rise in emissions.
