Breathing oxygen-enriched air 'improves metabolic rate'

Getting sufficient fresh air when suffering from a hangover is not always possible, but breathing-oxygen enriched air can be seen to lessen the effects of alcohol consumption, it has been suggested.

"The theory is that the increased oxygen flow improves the metabolic rate, and thus increases the speed at which the poisons are broken down," the BBC reports.

It goes on to state that it has been a long-established fact among scuba divers that oxygen treatment "does wonders in blowing away the fog".

The Independent recently reported that a new study, published in the academic journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, found that oxygen has a positive effect on the severity of the aches and pains associated with hangovers.

Metabolism rates were seen to increase in those administered with oxygen, with the alcohol being eliminated from the body at a much faster rate, researchers at Chungnam National University in South Korea found.
