Adolescent road accidents to be reduced through portable oxygen?

Young drivers may wish to invest in portable oxygen to keep them feeling alert while at the wheel.

This is because a study has found sleepiness at the wheel and poor sleep quality significantly increases the risk of motor vehicle accidents in adolescents.

Researchers at the University of Bologna in Italy found youngsters were twice as likely to have a crash if they felt tired while on the road.

Of the 339 students questioned, 80 had already been involved in a road accident and 15 per cent of them stated dozing at the wheel to have been the main cause of the incident.

Fabio Cirignotta, a professor of neurology at the institute and lead author of the study, said: "If a subject perceives sleepiness, he or she would probably already have a reduced performance at the wheel and nobody can safely detect the real instant when sleep is starting."

Squidoo.com recently observed portable oxygen can be an effective way for tired people to re-energise their mind.
